Art Unlimited Art 40 (2009)

ART  UNLIMITED ART 40 BASEL 2009

Using a range of fabricated signage and speech in conjunction with Google Earth (visiting the sites of suicide bombings, 1981 through to 2007), the work uses a sculptural installation aesthetic to interrogate persuasive/coercive methods ranging from the political and militaristic, through cults and fringe religious practices, to education, the internet and peer processes, institutional and otherwise (social solidarity).

Focus is on altruistic suicide methodologies including recruitment, training, indoctrination, marketing and glorification of action, set against secular faiths, such as democracy, and religious fundamentalism; exploring and elucidating the thinking processes and mind set which lie behind such ‘altruistic’ activities as ‘corporate team building’, ‘martyrdom’, ‘religious retreats’.

A project in collaboration with Starkwhite (NZ) & CNZ.
